Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce

  • 10 slices day-old bread, torn into small pieces
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Vanilla Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread bread pieces and raisins evenly in the prepared dish.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together milk, melted butter, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour over bread and lightly push down with a fork until bread is covered and soaking up the milk mixture.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly tapped.

For Vanilla Sauce:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Cook, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved and the sauce is smooth.
